Fairburn Educational Campus Update August, 2009

Brenau University has signed a lease for Building 2 at the Educational Campus. Plans are underway for a fall schedule of educational programs offered by this newest addition to our campus. Brenau University will occupy an 18,400-square-foot academic building in the four-acre education complex.

The first courses of study that Brenau will be offering as it builds both undergraduate and graduate programs will be in business administration with education and health care programs following as soon as possible. The university is also exploring adding additional undergraduate and graduate degree tracks in occupational therapy, interior design, project management and other disciplines. The newest edition to the Gainesville-based liberal arts institution will open Aug. 28 for the 2009-2010 school year.

Brenau’s arrival is another milestone along the way in this exceptional and unprecedented $10 million project funded by the Development Authority and the City of Fairburn. Phase 1 of the campus, situated along U.S. Highway 29, consists of two classroom buildings at 18,400 square feet each, a three-story, 11,400 square-foot colonial style administration building and two, 2,000 square-foot retail buildings.

GMC Community College currently occupies Building 1 and one floor of the administration building. The four-acre campus will eventually consist of four 18,400 square-foot brick classroom buildings, an 11,400 square-foot administrative building and two 2,000 square-foot retail buildings

A liberal arts Community College, GMC is offering a variety of Associate Degree programs designed to prepare students to transfer to senior level colleges or to enter specific career fields upon graduation. Preparation beyond the core in specialized degrees varies depending upon the individual objectives students set for their education. GMC currently has a total population of 675 students, faculty and staff on campus every week.

“Ultimately, we envision our campus as a first class educational venue incorporating adult and technical education and customized business and industry workforce training. This combination of programs, courses and services will enable the city of Fairburn to be recognized as the intelligent choice for South Metro Atlanta residents seeking post secondary training and lifelong educational experiences; and for companies and organizations requiring customized training and retraining services.” Ray Hannah, Development Authority Member
"The single greatest determinant in bringing, jobs, business and industry to a community is the availability of an educated workforce … and this educational complex will help insure accessibility for acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary for the residents of Fairburn and surrounding areas.” Hal Shields, Fairburn Development Authority.
