FAIRBURN'S ART IN THE ALLEY DEBUTS: FAMILY PORTRAIT [BETWEEN WALLS], IN CELEBRATION OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Fairburn's Art in the Alley Debuts its Fourth Iteration: Family Portrait [Between Walls], in Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month
Art in the Alley and Dashboard partner to spotlight undocumented people's stories in a new alleyway installation by artist Yehimi Cambrón.
FAIRBURN, GA – The City of Fairburn’s Art in the Alley and Dashboard announce Family Portrait [Between Walls] – a temporary public installation by artist Yehimi Cambrón featuring monumental portraits of her mixed-status immigrant family on poly silk panels suspended in the downtown Fairburn alleyway. The ethereality of the hanging portraits’ motion lures viewers into conversation with each individual, and encourages passersby to pause and reflect on the layered privileges and limitations of immigration status and citizenship in the United States.
“Family Portrait [Between Walls] is the third iteration of my 2019 Family Portrait series, initially exhibited at the High Museum of Art for Of Origins and Belonging, Drawn from
Atlanta, curated by Michael Rooks,” says artist Yehimi Cambrón, “There’s a harrowing weight to the circumstances surrounding undocumented people and their
families that can be easily missed by those who don’t face the fragility of this precarious status. In Family Portrait [Between Walls], these dense topics are suspended by the alleviating material fabric that captures the complex ways in which our lives exist— sometimes holding on by a thread.”
In the evening hours, the piece will be illuminated with bright light, providing safe passage through the city center. The installation will open in conjunction with the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month and the last Third Friday celebration in Fairburn, as well as run through the Fall Festival on October 7th, 2023.
“This installation is the first time this intimate portrait series of my mixed-
status immigrant family is on view in a public setting,” says artist Yehimi Cambrón, “Confined between walls, but illuminated in the darkness nonetheless.”
